The Concept of Wanting Things

Tags

I think that the want of things is a matter of nurture over nature. However, I believe the tendency for one to be more inclined to want more than others. Example, a child whose parents deny or limit in the extreme basic needs may cause a child to grow up with a greater desire to WANT more in order to compensate for what they lacked as a child. Conversely, a child may grow up the feelings of entitlement and believe that the world owes them more.In both cases I blame the parents for not moderating their child’s psychology. Culture is also a motivating force. Growing up around people who always strive for more than they need will also cause this sense of need. I would blame religion but it is really a lack of ethics and that may or may not be a failing with religion but more of a sense of a lack of identity and self esteem of the greedy person.

Since before the beginning of civilization, man has been trying to understand the world around him. He writes books like ‘The Bible,’ ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh,’ and ‘The Egyptian Book of the Dead’ and other philosophical or religious thoughts on the matter will continue to try to answer these questions.Humans will always look to the heavens for an answer. Why the human race continues to look toward a divine being that we can petition with our prayers and offerings, is because we seek to have some control over our fates. If those prayers or offerings are refused, (we can tell because our petitions go unheeded) we rationalize that perhaps our god (Jehovah, El, Elohim, Zeus, Apollo, Athena, Jupiter, Krishna) or the being currently in charge like an emperor, king, or president) doesn’t believe we, humankind, are worthy of survival, Now we are left with the question we started with — why? Why was this flood inflicted upon us. Is God mad at us because of our beliefs, our actions, our hypocrisy? It doesn’t matter, humans are flawed, and no matter what we do, think, or say, it is not going to change the fact that the universe works in mysterious ways, and we humans are just small specks of stardust in the cosmos and the divine behind it all doesn’t take sides, but, just shakes his head and continues on doing whatever divine beings do.

Theocracy

I am not willing to be ruled by a theocracy, whether it be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Satanic. Have we not seen what history has taught us about how this leads to corruption. As we also recall from history, the Mormons or Latter Day Saints went west and established themselves in the Utah territory. They wanted their own state, and of course, they wanted their own state religion. Unwilling to allow this new religious movement to have things their own way, the government sent in federal troops. History has taught us that, although a truly free country must have some sense of a founding set of principles, however, being free means that we must not allow our religious prejudices to overtake the common good of the secular government. Beware of fanatics of any kind.

Some Thoughts On Life

Tags

I have ever since I was in my preteens. wondered about purpose, and meaning of life, death and immortality. This is what I found; Life is not worth living unless one lives life to its full extent. Who determines a life’s full extent? You do. You decide who and what you want out of life and what you want to be. It is all up to you. You ask, does life have a meaning. It does to me. I created my meaning of life, for me and my family. I created my world where I am the master of my domain. Was it easy, hell no, it wasn’t but it made me who I am. Was it worth it, hell yes, to look into the eyes of my children and realize that their love for me and all that I have taught them. Yes. I struggled to find meaning in life and didn’t realize I had found it all along. It was always there, I just had to notice it.

Genetic Engineering is here to stay; get over it!

The article “Biology and Behavior” states that our genetic makeup plays an important role in how we behave. Although the debate continues whether or not we should rely solely on genetics to solve society’s problems; society must admit that genetics does play a vital role in how behavior is determined. Also scientists constantly study the effects of how different combination of genes causes certain behavior in laboratory animals. Genetic research is here to stay and as a society we are going to have to learn to deal with all its varied moral, legal, and social issues that this subject raises.

Our first look into genetic engineering comes in the form of understanding how our genes affect behavior. Researchers working in this field also look at other factors including environment. For example sometimes the environment has an effect on our body’s chemical makeup that causes genes to interact in ways that they were not meant to. To illustrate, a study of children in Philadelphia’s inner city showed that due to the high concentration levels of lead in their environment certain genetic qualities have manifested themselves in the form of disruptive behavior and in lower grades. Understanding that the environment can alter genes adds additional variables into the genes verses environment equation.

Although environment plays an important role in how humans develop, it is important to understand why genetic research is necessary rather than to approach the problem from a purely social context. The obvious reasons seem to go down the path of good intentions. If doctors identify a fetus with some form of a genetic defect, they feel that with proper genetic identification, there would be a good chance to correct this problem while the child is still in the mother’s womb.
