Life

The love of a parent for their child is unconditional, if it is not, it should be. Most importantly, the child should know that.

For many years, I have been training for this season. I think I officially decided to start when I was fifteen years old. As a boy living in California, born in the sixties and growing up in the seventies, not knowing what was in store for me, I started my preparations. At first, I took mental notes, watching, criticizing, evaluating, reflecting on everything I thought my father did well, pouncing on everything wrong that he did. I read a lot, everything I could, too much maybe, constantly finding articles to read at every turn, at every age. I read biographies of the famous and not so great, mysteries, horror, science-fiction, fantasy, philosophy, religion, new age, humor, history, even romance, all in preparation for this season. I listened to all types of music in my preparations for the journey ahead. I listened to Classical, Folk, Rock, Hard Rock, Soft Rock, Country, Comedy, and Jazz. I even did time as a DJ at several radio stations as part of training for battles to come. I believe that my love affairs of my youth were also part of this training. Experiencing the happiness, the sadness, the joy, the sorrow, the elations, the sorrow, and even my marriage and divorce were all part of training regimen.

Battlestar Galactica’s explicative Frak is spreading beyond geek speak.

I heard it again today, “Frak,” yes there it is again. On this Wednesday’s Criminal Minds, Penelope Garcia, the Behavioral Analysis Unit’s Technician. Yes, OK she is a nerd and she would know were the word came from, but still, “Frak” is taking off. This last Monday, on May 12, on The Big Bang Theory’s episode “The Plimpton Stimulation,” Howard, after being propositioned by Dr. Elizabeth Plimpton, a cosmological physicist from Princeton University, exclaims “What the Frak!” Last year on 30 Rock, Salma Hyack wore a “What The Frak” shirt and refers to it. It is my firm belief that the word Frak will become television’s favorite explicative within the next few years.

Many large cities have a few of them, and every medium size town has at least one, they are independent theaters.  Independent theaters are just that, independent.  They are not a part of a chain of theaters like American Multi-Cinema (AMC) or Cinemark or even the Arizona favorite, Harkins Theatres.  Tucson has all of these theaters scattered throughout the area; however, Tucson has what no other town has, The Loft Cinema.  If you are more of a cerebral person or have tastes that are less common with the general masses, then The Loft Cinema in Tucson Arizona, with two screening rooms is your stomping grounds.  Located on Speedway Boulevard, not far from the University of Arizona (UofA), the Loft Cinema is a haven for filmgoers.

Independent and Non-Profit

Not only is an independent theater, the Loft Cinema, also a nonprofit organization that enables filmmakers to display their art in the way the directors want it shown.  Unhampered by large corporate studios, The Loft Cinema relies on community support.  The building, located at 3233 East Speedway Boulevard, was turned into a nonprofit cinema house in 2002.  The Loft features foreign and independent filmmakers from all over the world.  On November 25, 2008 announced, “Sundance Institute Expands Collaboration with Local Art House Cinemas Nationwide,” which is, “a partnership with art house cinemas nationwide to build audiences and develop a supportive community of theatre owners committed to independent film.”  The Sundance goes on to list 18 independent theaters including Tucson’s own Loft Cinema with in their ranks.  The Tucson Weekly, Tucson’s own independent newspaper, listed The Loft Cinema as “The Best Theater,” in Tucson since the theater’s re-opening in 2002.

crusades image 0001“…a race absolutely alien to God…has invaded the land of the Christians… ” Thus, spoke Pope Urban II on Tuesday November 20 1095 of the old Julian calendar. The Crusades still fascinate us to this day; we write books about the period, and we view films about the crusades to this day. Although information on the era of the crusades are expansive, unless you are a historian or a history buff, watching anything that the History Channel has to offer, the most we know, we get from the movies. A simple search on the internet will yield over three million results. Let’s start at the beginning…

Pope Urban II’s world at the end of the first millennium
Baptized in 1035 as Odo de Lagery, the future pope, was born in Châtillion-sur-Marne, in northern France, grew up in a world divided by bloody feudal battles and general lawlessness. After the decay and fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the ‘barbarian’ peoples in Gaul, in the fifth and sixth centuries, the Visigoths, Avars, Lombards, battling for territory amongst themselves and the Franks, the region now known as France was ready for order. By 800 CE as the Franks established dominance over the region and consolidated power under Charlemagne, the empire once again sunk into decay and Continue reading →

As Above So Below Poster

As Above So Below Poster

I am not sure why any sane person would want to descend into the bowels of the earth for any reason.  Written by director John Erick Dowdle (“Quarantine,” “Devil”) and his brother Drew, “As Above, So Below,” follows a group of adventurers into the catacombs of Paris in search of the mythical Philosopher’s Stone. Perdita Weeks stars as Scarlett, a young academic who is obsessed with finding the illusive stone. Ben Feldman (“Mad Men”) plays George, Scarlett’s language translator and partner in crime. Edwin Hodge (“The Purge”) is Benji who is filming this documentary for prosperity. “As Above, So Below” contains plenty of scares as the group ventures deep into the unknown. Continue Reading
